Tarka Country has an incredible variety of landscapes compressed into a relatively small area. The hills of Exmoor, softer than the tors of Dartmoor, stop abruptly at the north Devon coast forming high cliffs and creating some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the country. Further inland, the rolling farmland is riven with wooded valleys cut by sparkling streams and lazy rivers. Each part of Tarka Country offers a different experience with a wealth of walking opportunities available for exploring each one. Long distance walking routes. short circular walks, nature reserves and farm trails offer something for every type of walker. Here are just some of the possibilities.
Tarka Trail The Tarka Trail is a 180 mile/280 km footpath (see map) which traces the travels of `Tarka the Otter' from the novel by Henry Williamson. The full 180 mile route is an ideal way to discover the whole of Tarka Country, perhaps on a two week walking holiday. Shorter sections of the Trail can be walked for a great day out. From Braunton to Meeth the Trail is a cycle/walkway. A book, `The Tarka Trail: A Walker's Guide' can be ordered from the Tarka Country Trust.
South West Coast Path A total 600 miles/378 km in length, the path along the coast of northern Devon changes in mood from the rugged rocks of Hartland Point, to the soft wooded slopes around Clovelly and the dramatic Exmoor Coast. Many sections are suitable for a day's walking.
Two Moors Way Stretching over 100 miles/63 km, this path crosses both Dartmoor and Exmoor, passing through miles of little known and unspoilt countryside in between. Sections of the path can be walked comfortably in a day. The path goes through the village of Morchard Bishop which can be reached by train on the Tarka Line from either Exeter or Barnstaple. Guide books for both the above trails can be obtained from Tourist Information Centres, bookshops and other information outlets in the area.
Village Trails & Local walks Tarka Country is rich in picturesque small villages, many steeped in history, yet still lively centres for local people. Many have their own village trails highlighting their special features and exploring the surrounding countryside.
Nature Trails & wildlife reserves Get closer to nature by following a nature trail or exploring a wildlife reserve. Several members of the Tarka Country Partnership have nature trails in their grounds and there are several wildlife reserves in the area. Self-guided trail leaflets are available for some, while you are left to discover others for yourself or in the company of an expert guide on one of the many guided walks taking place in the area. Look out for details locally.
