Art in The Travelling Landscape along the Tarka Trail Thirty artworks, designed and created by 8 local and regional artists are now installed on a 35 mile stretch of the Tarka Trail between Barnstaple and Okehampton in Devon. These artworks include thirteen waymarkers created by a group of three Devon based artists - graphic designer and arts worker, Simon Heath, and Lisa Scattergood, lettering artist and sign writer, both from xheight design and blacksmith, Spencer Larcombe from the Organics Lab, based in Totnes. The waymarkers provide information on local facilities within the villages along the route. Barnstaple based, artist and sculptor, Geoff Stainthorp has designed and made two shelters for the Instow to Barnstaple section of the Trail. One shelter sited at Isley Marsh uses traditional boat building techniques in it's construction. Sustrans lead artist, Katy Hallett, worked with Marland School and Dolton and Clinton Primary Schools on a series of mosaic benches which are sited between Petrockstowe and the highest point of the Trail near East Yarde. The project was funded by Torridge LEADER project, Sustrans Millennium award, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Torridge District Council, North Devon District Council, West Devon Borough Council, Tarka Country Trust, Beaford Arts Centre, Northern Devon Coast & Countryside Service, Sustrans, Watts Blake Bearne and Company PLC, Arts & Business Pairing Scheme. |
